Begin your resume with a resume summary to grab the attention of employers and show them why you're for the job. A resume summary is a  statistics-heavy resume introduction that highlights your most relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.

Let's break down an IT resume summary to see how you should write one. Here's the first sentence:

IT specialist with 7+ years of professional experience in information security and digital forensics.

From this first sentence, the hiring manager knows immediately that you match the job opening.

It's a direct response to the hiring manager's job description: In this case, the hiring manager is seeking someone with 3+ years of professional experience in information security and digital forensics.

Here are the final two sentences of this resume summary:

Expert with a wide variety of security, engineering, networking, and operating system software. Possesses an associate degree in Information Security and Digital Forensics

Again, placing the associate degree so prominently in the resume summary tells the hiring manager, “I have all the necessary requirements to do the job, so please read the rest of my resume.”

2. Include as many IT skills as you can

Hiring in the IT industry need to know you understand more than just computer skills. They want to know about your relevant advanced hardware and software knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Your resume will be filtered by an applicant tracking system (ATS). This software scans for resume keywords and phrases to work out if your resume and IT cover letter contain the IT skills relevant to the role. An ATS filters out bad resumes and gives hiring managers only the relevant ones.

To find the most relevant keywords to use, read the job posting, highlight the IT skills in demand in it, and put them into your own resume (assuming you actually have those abilities).

Here's a list of IT skills you might need:
